Pollinators are in peril. As we have written here before, many pollinator populations necessary for our food supply are in decline. One of the reasons for this decline is habitat loss. There has been work in our region to create habitat for bees and butterflies. Areas of the Green Bay and McClory Trail have been cleared of invasive species and re planted with pollinator friendly plants. Nearby communities have also started similar work through this grant program. Several Go Green Groups host native plant sales in the spring that include species friendly to pollinators. Here are some things you can do to help provide habitat for pollinators:

1. Use natural lawn care. Pesticides harm beneficial insects. Learn more here.

2. Plant natives. If you replace some of your grass with native plants, you will provide food and shelter to our pollinators. Here are some tips on how to get started.

3. Get your municipality on board. Ask your Mayor to sign on to the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge, and to convert some public land to pollinator friendly habitat. Road right of ways and parks are two areas that could make good habitat.
