PFAS, Per- and Polyfluorinated Substances, are “a group of chemicals used to make fluoropolymer coatings and products that resist heat, oil, stains, grease, and water”, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They can harm our environment and our health. More detailed information about the health risks and environmental impacts of PFAS is here. Unfortunately, PFAS is used in many products and we may be unaware of exposures in our daily lives. For example PFAS has been found in high levels in some contact lenses, and is used in some outdoor clothing as a water repellent, although some manufacturers and retailers are working to eliminate its use.
