SUMMARY:Butterfly and Dragonfly Populations\, what Research shows
DESCRIPTION:Doug Taron\, Curator of Biology and Vice President of Research and Conservation\, Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum \n“I don’t see as many butterflies as I used to.” Is this statement really true? \nDoug Taron from the Illinois Butterfly Monitoring Network tracks long-term trends in butterfly populations.  He sees a significant decline in abundance from 1997 to 2017 both regionally and in individual counties.  He will discuss his research\, which also includes dragonflies and damselflies\, as measured by the Illinois Odonate Survey. \nRegister for in-person or virtual attendance here\, and browse our other events here!

SUMMARY:Bird Collisions: Hazardous Features and Easy Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Annette Prince\, Director\, Chicago Bird Collision Monitors \nNearly a billion birds perish each year as a result of window strikes. They see the sky or tree in a window reflection and fly towards it\, dying at the solid pane.  For decades\, Annette Prince of the Chicago Bird Collision Monitors has collected about 11\,000 birds a year\, helping the Field Museum build an extraordinary profile of bird collisions in our area\, and saving thousands of injured songbirds. She will discuss the perils facing our migratory birds\, the buildings where they collide in Chicago and Evanston and why.  She shares easy steps we can each take to help them find safe passage through Chicagoland. It’s a concern only heightened in recent years as our population of birds declines while our reliance on glass grows as a foundation element in architectural design. \nRegister for in-person or virtual attendance here\, and browse our other events here!

SUMMARY:Our Urban Wildlife: Coyotes\, Bats\, Rats and other critters
DESCRIPTION:Seth Magle\, Ph.D.\, Director\, Urban Wildlife Institute\, Lincoln Park Zoo \nWhat wildlife wanders\, forages and hunts in our urban ecosystem?  Some species are new arrivals\, and others have been here all along\, thank you. Using Lincoln Park Zoo’s diverse scientific specialties\, the Urban Wildlife Institute studies the interaction between metropolitan development and nature.  Learn about how we can minimize human-wildlife conflict and sustain biodiversity. Hear about how the Urban Wildlife Institute aims for Chicago to become a model for urban areas struggling with wildlife relocation\, rehabilitation\, disease\, and conflicts\, and how they have created a scientific model for urban wildlife biology now followed by more than fifty other cities worldwide. \nRegister for in-person or virtual attendance here\, and browse our other events here!
